"Remember as you view the information of those listed in this web site, and if you are a direct descendant of these people, they are the greatest people you will ever read about. If any one of them had not of existed, you would not either. Honor them and their lives for they still live in you. Your blood, eyes, hair, and every part of you, has some part of them. They are our past, and we are their present."

This web site is for historical record of one Ulmer Family's ancestry. Most of the information available here is the result of research and hard work by Joanne Eaton. Without her interest and love of family I would not have been inspired and would not have the information needed to create this site. Thank you Joanne.

Joanne and I would also like to give credit and thanks to Virginia White, Jack Ulmer, Mary Lou Ulmer Sharr Piearson, Kathryn Plese and Pat Mount for their work and research. We thank you all !

Why Study and Research Our Ancestors?

When I was young, about 6 years old, my parents divorced. I rarely was able to visit my grandparents because of the distance between where I lived and where they lived. Because of this I grew up knowing very little about, and who, the family members were. At the time it seemed of little importance, although I did feel as if I was missing out on something because I did not know these people.

I know people today that think "family" only consist of their children, their parents, and grandparents. I submit to you that this is not true. I think family consist not only of a few generations, but all. Even those who lived long before our own life, and also those who will come long after we ourselves have passed. One does not have to meet the other, or have even lived in the same time to be a member of your family. Is family only those you have met, or shared a Christmas gift with? I think not! Those that we are lucky enough to have met are not our only family members. They are only the ones we met.

Just as I do not know those who are yet to come in our Ulmer family, my ancestors never knew me. And yes, simply knowing of someone does not mean you know him or her either. I did not know the personal thoughts of those who lived before my time. But I know not the personal thoughts of family members who are alive today either. To be a family member does not require one to be in contact with another. The only requirement is that a bond by blood or marriage exists, and God willing, we have respect for each other.

What has all this got to do with the question of why study our ancestral past and the family?

Knowing who they are, and/or who they were will give you a sense of belonging. It also is a way of caring and loving those who are your family. Those that passed before you may not know you care. But you know, and that is one of your rewards. When you research your ancestors it will give you a feeling of being a better person and give you "roots". You will begin to love and care about those people. You will realize you have a great deal of respect about the good, and hard times, of their lives. You may also become a little more proud of your family. It is also a way to honor all family members, past, present, those to come in the future, and yes, yourself.

If you decide to share the findings of your research with others, or only wish to know it for yourself, it makes no difference. The rewards for doing so are yours. That is the answer of the question, "Why study and research our ancestors?"
